What is cat neutering?

Neutering is a surgical procedure to spay or castrate your cat to ensure they are no longer able to breed.

What is cat spaying?

Spaying your cat involves the surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus. This procedure is called an ovariohysterectomy, or spay.

What is cat castration?

Castration is the removal of the testes’ functionality. Surgical castration is the removal of excision of both testes. Chemical castration uses pharmaceutical drugs to deactivate the testes. Pet castration is used for both birth control and behaviour management purposes.

What happens when my cat is neutered?

Your cats’s neutering operation is performed under anaesthesia. Your pet is then carefully monitored after surgery by our highly-qualified and registered veterinary nurses.

When do cats have their first season?

Kittens/cats can have their first season (or come into 'heat') anytime from 4 to 12 months old.

How often do cats come into season?

Cats can have multiple cycles of heat each year, usually between February and October.

How old does a kitten have to be to be neutered?

We recommend early neutering female kittens from four months and before they are one year old in order for them to receive optimum health benefits.
For male kittens, we recommend they are neutered at about 4 to 5 months old for optimum health benefits.

How long does a cat neutering operation take?

Neutering cats is also a relatively quick procedure, especially males, which helps keep the risk low. In most cases your cat will be reunited with you the same day.

Here at the RVC Beaumont Sainsbury vet practice, we offer a full cat and kitten neutering service across a wide variety of species. As we are a gold standard ISFM clinic - we have exceptionally high standards in all aspects of cat healthcare.

When can I get my cat neutered?

We run spaying and neutering clinics Monday to Friday (advance booking required). Limited weekend appointments available which may incur additional charges.

How much does cat spaying/neutering cost?

Your pet spaying/neutering costs will vary according to the type of neutering involved and your circumstances (Last price update: 1st August 2024)

• The price for standard cat or kitten castration is £123.04
• The price for standard cat or kitten spay is £143.04

The cat/kitten neutering prices are inclusive of the operation, 2 x post-operative checks and a buster collar

Why is cat neutering something I should consider?

Neutering/spaying female cats can have a number of advantages

• prevention of unwanted pregnancies
• reduction in risk of mammary (breast) cancer
• reduction in risk of developing cystic ovarian disease and womb infection (pyometra)  
• reduction in behaviours associated with coming into 'season' or 'heat' such as 'calling', excessive urine spraying and increased tendency to roam

Advantages of neutering/castrating of male cats include

• reduction in tendency to roam (and therefore reducing risk of road traffic injuries
• reduction in aggression with other cats and consequential injuries/diseases
• reduced urine spraying indoors (linked to male indoor cats in particular)
• elimination of testicular cancer (if your cat is found to have an undescended testicle)
